Innovative Child Care Strategies
One emerging strategy being explored by the Alliance is a sustainable funding mechanism to support child care, noting the success of voter-approved Children’s Funds across many states. We are working to assess community interest and readiness for local/regional efforts to build sustainable funding to support thriving kids and families.
What is permissible in WI
States have differing legislation permitting voter-approved initiatives or referendums. State of Wisconsin law specifies that “Wisconsin voters cannot introduce initiative or referendums on a statewide basis, but voters do have the opportunity to participate in the law-making process in cities and villages.” In an analysis prepared and issued in February of 2020, the WI Legislative Reference Bureau (LRB) identifies the procedures and requirements such as circulation of a petition, number of signatures, and timeframe.
